The Raingarden project had a wonderful kick start at the beginning of 2022 when project manager Sadhbh Burt Fitzgerald was mentioned in 2022’s Ones to Watch under the sustainability category. Written by Catherine Cleary who also co-runs her own urban regeneration & environmental project called Pocket Forests.
In October 2021, we installed a brick-clad Raingarden outside the entrance to CoisCeim dance centre alongside Jenny O’Leary’s exhibition “A Reaction to Place”. This is the only planter so far that includes small trees (bay) nestled in amongst herbaceous perennials.
“A REACTION TO PLACE connects world renowned Irish contemporary dance company, CoisCéim, with architect Jenny O’Leary, in a design project that harnesses the rich heritage and embodied energy of 42 Fairview Strand to develop and present a blueprint for its evolution into a self-sustaining space where dance can thrive.”
“Our big (water) butt is a thing of beauty because it saves us the walk to an indoor tap. But its kerb appeal is probably not to everyone’s taste. So how can you make rain harvesting beautiful? This is where the team at Bí Urban come in.”
“It would be great to focus this in Stoneybatter at first so we could measure exactly what effect this project would have on a water system,” says Burt-O’Dea.
Says Burt-Fitzgerald: “Each individual person can just build one, create a solution to this problem and also create a really nice environment for themselves at home.”
